Why is play so important?
Research shows that children learn best through play and child-led experiences. They thrive in environments where they are free to explore, discover, and follow their natural curiosity. Through play, children develop essential skills they will carry with them into adulthood. The early years—especially from birth to age three—are the most critical period for growth and development.
Learning through play is joyful, active, meaningful, and socially engaging. These experiences support healthy development and help children build both academic foundations, such as early math concepts, and important “learning-to-learn” skills like problem-solving, self-regulation, and executive function.
Child-led activities look different from teacher-directed ones. When children take the lead, they are more engaged, motivated, and invested in both the process and the outcome. For this reason, the majority of our day is intentionally designed around child-led learning experiences.
